Abstract

A distinctive type of medieval Hebrew poetry was born in Al-Andalus society in the tenth century when Arabic verse was assimilated by Hebrew authors to create a new secular and religious verse. This poetry, produced in what is now Spain and the southern area of France under Iberian influence during the Middle Ages, has a well-defined scholarly tradition, as its bibliography of anthologies, canonical literary histories and substantial scholarship clearly show. In the Dream of the Poem: Hebrew Poetry from Muslim and Christian Spain, 950-1492, Peter Cole offers a new and fresh vision of the varied landscape of this singular lyrical tradition. Cole’s expertise as a translator as well as his vast knowledge of medieval Hebrew poetry are instrumental in proving us with this new path for understanding this poetry both aesthetically and culturally.
