In all his literary production, Umberto Saba returns repeatedly to the problem of God and how he perceives its importance. Suspended between Jewish family roots, a Christian environment and a disengaged context, he ends up complying with the last one. He avoids every opportunity of joining the divinity that he needs, without giving of himself to it. We can read the “Canzoniere” also in the “itinerarium mentis in Deum (the itineraryof the mind towards god)” his point of view. It doesn’t reach the pursued aim, as related in the Saba’s scripts.
